During the 1999 UNESCO General Conference, almost all of the 170 UNESCO Member States accepted a resolution regarding the L.N.L. project, in which Member States and the international community were asked to give full support for the implementation of this project. The resolution was accepted at the 26th plenary meeting of the General Conference, in Paris, on November 17, 1999.
Similar support has only been received by one another project: the construction of the famous Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in Egypt. With the help of UNESCO, the Alexandrian library raised the funds necessary for construction. But the amount of support that other states may provide for the construction of the new L.N.L. building will depend on Latvia’s own ability to find funds for the project in Latvia and abroad.
UNESCO Commission of International Experts
After Latvia’s receipt of support from the General Conference, UNESCO established a Commission of International Experts for the methodological management, supervision, and improvement of the L.N.L. project. The Commission of Experts will include competent officials and the top worldwide authorities in their fields, invited by the UNESCO Director-General, Koïchiro Matsuura.
The UNESCO Commission of International Experts has convened several times for meetings in Riga. During these meetings, the experts have evaluated the development of the project and offered recommendations for the improvement of the project.
