As construction begins on the Castle of Light, a live Internet broadcast will let users watch events unfold at the new library’s building site.

Several hundred people who had supported and promoted the Latvian National Library project were invited to a special ceremony to mark the occasion. Among the guests were politicians, economists, financiers, luminaries from the world of culture and the arts, academicians, businessmen, and representatives of the nongovernmental sector.

The state agency The New Three Brothers has signed a contract with “National Association of Construction Firms”, which has undertaken to construct the Latvian National Library building in the next three years.

Ten years ago there was a conference in Riga with the theme Censorship in a modern society. The aim was to discuss how various forms of censorship existed and functioned in libraries in different countries during the period up to 1990. One result of the conference was an interesting report. I spoke about the role of the libraries in the development of a democratic society. I stressed upon the importance of freedom of information, words first expressed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt just after the Second World War. His words are milestones for all libraries: public libraries, scientific libraries and National libraries.

On Monday, October 29, a new computer game, “Uzcel Gaismas pili!” (Raise the Castle of Light!), was released. The main characters are modernized versions of Latvian authors and characters from Latvian literature – Lāčplēsis, the Princess, Rainis, Aleksandrs Čaks, and others – and the action takes place in a virtual Castle of Light, the planned building of the Latvian National Library (LNB).
