Why Should the L.N.L. Project be Implemented?

Why do we need the Castle of Light?

  • In the new building, the library will be better able to fulfill its functions, provide higher-quality services, and attract new library users.
  • The new library building will have places for more than 1,000 readers; this will allow the library to serve approximately 3,000 visitors a day.
  • The library will be accessible for people with special needs.
  • At the Castle of Light, 335,000 books and other printed materials, as well as information resources from all over the world, will be freely available.
  • When searching for information, readers will be guaranteed the assistance of a professional and knowledgeable librarian.
  • The new library will be home to a collection of six million printed works.
  • A specific L.N.L. zone will service readers twenty-four hours a day.
  • The Castle of Light will be a knowledge center where group activities may be set up for schoolchildren, lectures and seminars may be organized for students, conference and meetings may be arranged for professionals of various sectors, and researchers may enjoy all the available resources.
  • The new library will be a pleasant meeting place for friends, business partners, and like-minded readers.
  • The L.N.L. will play an active role in the cultural life of Riga, hosting exhibits, shows, and concerts.
  • At the library, users will have the opportunity to plug in and use their personal laptop computers.
  • Users may reserve texts online, specifying the time when they wish to use them at the library.
  • The library’s services will also be available to children and schoolchildren; a children’s literature center will be located on a floor of the library.

Why do we need Lightnet?

  • The library will employ knowledgeable, well-trained librarians who will help users navigate the wide range of available information and find what they need.
  • Information may also be received by requesting a text, free of charge, from any library in Latvia; the text will be received the following day, at the library nearest to the user.
  • Every library in Latvia will have several workstations equipped with computers and Internet connections.
